Two days later he had a call from Paul Baker, an environmental studies lecturer at Dundee University who had responded to Adrian’s WhatsApp post. ‘You wanted to talk to people who’d lived at Murriemuir,’ he said. ‘I was there for a year until the university sold it. If you’d like to meet up in Dundee sometime, I’ve got some photos you might find helpful.’

Paul had an office at the university and Ian arranged to call on him the next day.

The department he was looking for was housed in a modern block built in what Ian thought of as brutalist style. And with inadequate parking. He was directed a few hundred yards to a car park that was spacious and not too full, but which was guarded by a barrier that required him to punch a number into a keypad. Paul Baker had failed to mention it and Ian wondered if he should call him and ask for a number. But perhaps on-campus parking was strictly for university staff. They’d want to keep out the unacademic hoi polloi, wouldn’t they? He had arrived early and had plenty of time to find somewhere in one of the surrounding streets. After twenty minutes of driving around the edge of the campus, he spotted a van pulling out of a parking space and slid his car into it before anyone else had the same idea. After a few moments of trying to work out some baffling regulations about parking on different sides of the road on alternate days of the week, not staying for more than two hours and not returning within twenty-four hours unless he possessed a resident’s permit, he decided to take a chance. He could tell the space was on the correct side of the road because that’s where all the other cars were parked. There were no traffic wardens in sight so he could probably stretch the two hours a bit and a glance at his watch told him he’d need to step on it a bit or he’d be late. Luckily, although he felt he’d been searching for a long time, he’d been driving in a circle. Over the roofs of houses, he could see the top of the building just a couple of streets away.

Arriving at the entrance, he was asked to sign in and was given a visitor’s pass (not to be used for parking, it said in big black capital letters on the back). He swiped himself through another barrier and studied a map. The office he wanted was on the fourth floor. He could either climb an imposing staircase or take a lift. He decided, purely on the grounds of shortage of time, to take the lift. Emerging on the fourth floor, he found himself in a long corridor of identical grey doors, which luckily had names on them. Paul Baker’s was at the far end of the corridor next to a window that looked out over the still half-empty car park. Ian tapped on the door and was invited inside.
